Hawthorne Valley Farm has recently launched their Buttermilk and Yogurt line through United Natural Foods, Inc, and now available nationally. Currently, HVF makes four flavors of yogurt: Plain, Maple Vanilla, Strawberry, and Lemon a Buttermilk. They only use milk from their own herd of 60 dairy cows here at the farm, ensuring the milk to be of the freshest and highest quality. All of their products are 100% certified organic and biodynamic.
When asking the Steffen Schneider his favorite part of working on a BD farm, Schneider admits, "My favorite practice on the farm is an early morning milking, especially during the grazing season. Bringing in the herd from pasture with a moon overhead or the sun just about to rise, magical! Harvesting the milk from happy, well fed cows, rewarding! Cleaning the barn afterward, collecting the 'black gold', satisfying." He also goes onto explain why a BD dairy farm is different than an organic farm. "The herd is integrated into the whole farm organism. The integrity of the animals is honored, and all their gifts are fully appreciated, manure, milk, calves. The horns enhance the cosmic-qualitative aspect of the digestion and the resulting milk has a different quality, expressing the unique character of place."
Schneider has been a biodynamic farmer for over five decades now. Steffen Schneider has over three decades of experience as a biodynamic farmer and herdsman. Currently he is the Director of Farming Operations at Hawthorne Valley Farm. He holds a masters degree in agriculture from the Justus Von Liebig University in Giessen, Germany.
